Big Question February

Have you ever heard someone say that they’re afraid to do evangelism because someone might ask a question they don’t know the answer to? We don’t want to do a bad job of explaining the gospel and we don’t want to look like we don’t know what we believe in. Fair enough. But the answer is not ‘less evangelism’ (like its something we’ve given up for February). The answer is ‘learn to answer those questions.’

The thing is, there aren’t unlimited questions that people ask when you talk to them about the gospel. And that means you can have a good go at trying to answer them before they come up.

Here are 10 common questions that people ask about Christianity. How would you answer them?

1. How can there be a God when there’s so much suffering in the world?
2. Why isn’t it easier for everyone to believe?
3. What about people who haven’t heard about Jesus?
4. If we’re going to die, what’s the reason for life and going through it?
5. Hasn’t science disproved creation?
6. Isn’t the church full of religious hypocrites?
7. Isn’t it arrogant to say Christianity is the only true religion?
8. Why does God need me to believe in him? Isn’t that just egotistic?
9. Isn’t the bible full of contradictions?
10. Isn’t Christianity just one option for making sense of life?

Learning to answer tough questions doesn’t just prepare us to answer them for unbelievers. It also helps us to think deeply about our faith – what we believe and why it stacks up. Our friends have good and legitimate questions that deserve good answers – and the amazing thing is that we have those answers! We just need to think about it.

Here’s an idea: give everyone in your small group one of these questions (or work in pairs if that’s easier). During the week try to come up with a short answer that you could give at a evangelistic event. There’s more than one way to answer these questions so don’t worry about ‘getting it right’. If you get a bit stuck ask a Christian friend or find a book that helps. Next time you meet share some of your answers and talk about them. And next time a gospel conversation comes your way, don’t think ‘shut it down, quick!’ Think 'I'm ready. Let me tell you more...'
