Why serve if I get nothing in return?

Posted by The 4pm Team on February 29, 2012

On the basis of what we've seen so far in Mark's gospel, we're unsurprised to find that, once again, the disciples are getting things wrong.

On this occasion in Mark 9:33-37, they're repeating the same old longings to achieve greatness and high status on earth that we saw Peter fall for in 8:32-33 and all of them fall for in the immediately preceding passage (8:14-29), where they seem to assume that they themselves should be great enou Continue reading…

Inappropriate deathbed conversation

Posted by RML Wednesday Mark on February 24, 2012

Old Grandad Smith is lying in his hospital bed, when the doctors come in. He's not got long left, the family are told. He's going to die in the next couple of weeks. The mood is sombre; but the grandchildren stood around the bed are distracted. They're arguing about which one will take over Grandad's business when he's gone.

We've just had a great weekend away thinking about the cross. The question is, is that it? Doctrine ticked off, look forward to the next weekend?

That kind of thinking is easy to slip into, but really unhelpful; because as we're seeing in Mark 8-10 at the moment, understanding the cross rightly is utterly crucial to how we view God and ourselves, and if you're anything like me, the times that our worldviews are really changed are when Continue reading…

Of what use is a `dialogue event'?

Posted by City Team on February 20, 2012

Jesus says that if we're his disciples we are to ‘go and make disciples of all nations' (Matthew 28:19). He could have said ‘wait here, while I go and make disciples of all nations'. But that option is out! It's worth thinking a bit about how we can ‘go' in our own situations. For some people going will mean literally going somewhere else, like Belarus, Cape Town or Hull. However, for many of us ‘going' will mean ‘staying'...in the City Continue reading…
