Homework Helpers

Helping young people with their school work

We all like to help our children do well in school. However, this can be difficult for parents who don’t speak English well or who were not educated in this country.

St Helen’s, along with some volunteers from other churches in East London, run a scheme which links children with English-speaking “Homework Helpers”. Over the last few years, Homework Helpers has provided volunteers for many Bangladeshi families in particular. This has been a great way of building bridges between our communities and of practically loving our neighbours.

For Potential Helpers…
The basic commitment is 1 hour/week for one term. This is to see if you like this form of service and if the family likes you. Ideally, we would want you to build a longer term relationship with the family, but any level of involvement can be profitable.

We will find you a family and introduce you to them. We will provide training on how to be a helper. We also have a termly meeting to catch-up, pray together and have some further training.

Helpers say:

“I end up having as much fun as the children do!”

“Homework Helpers is great as you build up real friendships with youngsters from a different culture which you might not usually have much contact with, and hopefully point them to Christ – I also get to talk at length in the international language of football!”

For Families Needing Help…
The Helper will come to your home once a week to help your child with his or her schoolwork. For a young child this might mean listening to him or her read. An older child might need help with homework and the Helper can also become something a mentor. In short, your Helper will work to encourage your child’s learning.

All Helpers are unpaid volunteers, and so this service is free. They receive CRB checks and references are taken up for them.

Children and families say:

“You’re my favourite visitor, and my mum’s as well!”

“We are truly grateful for all the help you have given us and enjoy a good friendship with our Helper.”

"Our helper’s brilliant, he has so much patience, they love him to bits. Whenever he comes, Sayeed is able to concentrate on his work.”
