The St Helen's 9:38 programme

The Bible talks of Jesus looking at crowds “harassed and helpless” with no one to tell them the great news of salvation. Filled with compassion, in Matthew 9:38, he calls his disciples to “pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest”.

In response to that prayer we have set up the St Helen’s 9:38 programme. Our goal is to send out more and better equipped teachers of God’s word, whether church leaders or those in specialist roles. Our aim for our 9:38 programme is to help Christians explore the prospect of this type of work and develop their Bible teaching gifts in preparation for serving God.

About once a term we arrange an evening to help us think about issues such as:

  • why we need full-time Bible teachers
  • who should do it
  • what Bible teaching ministry looks like in a variety of settings
  • how I know if I should teach the Bible full-time
  • what the next step for me might be
  • what sort of training is available

The national Nine Thirty-Eight Network www.ninethirtyeight.org runs weekends away which give an opportunity to look at these sorts of issues in more depth, with more time to ask questions and to clarify your thinking by talking with people experienced in full-time gospel ministry and others who are considering it.
