Genesis 2:4–4:26 is foundational and perfectly outlines why our world is as it is. Chapter 4 sits outside the main literary structure of this section of Genesis. We have been shown that the fall is central to why our world is how it is. Now we are shown what we are left with. In place of 'filling the earth and subduing it' we have unhappy families (dislocation, isolation, insecurity) and religious violence.
