Escaping distraction—the apostles' priority

Overlooking some of the church widows caused a pastoral crisis in the early church. The apostles appointed godly men to attend to the situation but insisted that they carry on devoting themselves to prayer and preaching. Why did they think that was so important? And is it still important today?
