We should talk more about sex.

Sex isn’t the only thing that we should talk more about, it’s probably not even in the top 3 things we should talk more about, but, yes, I think we should talk a little more about sex.

Let me explain…

I grew up in a conservative Christian home, I got a book on sex when I was about 11, and had to endure an awful ‘chat’ about sex with my mother. (Squirm) Coming to London, finding new friends, and hilariously ending up with a job involving sexual health, was quite the education- everyone talked about sex, they talked about it all the time, and they talked about it in graphic details.

Well not quite everyone…. No-one really mentioned it at church…

And I know, definitely amongst women, single and married, that’s still often the case. (That said most of our conversations need not be about sex – we’re talking about occasional conversations, with good Christian friends.)

That’s why we’re running a whole morning, on what the Bible says on sex, dating and relationships.

Because we believe it’s Bible truth that equips us to talk well about sex.

Because although the Bible tells us there is a way not to talk about sex, it also tells us there is a good way to talk about sex!

Let me expand…

There is a way not to talk about sex: ‘sexual immorality ...must not even be named among you. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking…’ Eph 5:3-4. We shouldn’t talk in a flippant, humorous or casual way about sexual immorality that would cause others in our church family to fall (Eph 5:5-6). Christ died to purify his church (Eph 5: 25-26), and we should encourage his church in purity, not distract it with sin.

But there is a good way to talk about sex. The contrast made in Ephesians is: ‘speaking the truth in love’ Eph 4:15-16. When we hear Bible truth and talk lovingly about that truth, we grow together in our understanding of God and his plan. That means if we hear God’s truth on sex (because, spoiler alert, God talks about it in his eternal plan), and talk together lovingly about these truths, it’ll be good for us. We’ll grow in unity (Eph 4:13), build the church (Eph 4:16), and be equipped to stand against the world’s lies (Eph 4:14) and aren’t so many of them about sex?.
